Inspired by the Japanese classic, our award-winning Vegan Furikake has earned 2-star recognition for its outstanding authentic flavour - all without any animal products.  This colourful, crunchy seasoning features our Guernsey seaweed with other ingredients to deliver the perfect balance of salty, nutty and umami flavours.  

The Japanese word furikake comes from the verb ‘furikakeru’ which translated into English means ‘to sprinkle’.  Versions of furikake are found as far back as the 13th-century but furikake as we know it today was developed in the early 1900s.  There are many theories on who ‘invented’ furikake. One of these is a pharmacist who was concerned about the lack of calcium in the diet of Japanese people, ground fish bones into powder and sprinkled it on to rice for a dietary supplement. He added ground dried fish, nori (seaweed) and sesame to make the powder more flavoursome to eat.  This product was called ‘Gohan no Tomo’ – ‘A Friend for Rice’.    It became a nutritional supplement for the military during World War 1 and later other versions were manufactured on large scale to make is accessible to the Japanese working class to address malnourishment.

We’ve made our version vegan so there are no fish bones(!) or any fish at all in this seasoning.  Traditionally furikake in Japan doesn’t contain chilli but we know how much our customers like chilli!  Try this version to add a vegan friendly boost of flavour to your favourite dishes. 

Don’t just keep it to plain white rice, it’s use is versatile and doesn’t need to be restricted to Japanese dishes. 

Ideas for use:

  • Sprinkle generously over steamed rice or rice bowls
  • Top avocado toast, rice cakes or crackers
  • Season popcorn for a Japanese-inspired snack
  • Garnish ramen or udon noodles
  • Sprinkle over edamame or steamed vegetables
  • Add crunch and umami to salads
  • Mix into scrambled tofu or eggs
  • Coat roasted chickpeas for a crunchy snack
  • Sprinkle over cucumber salad or Asian slaws
  • Use as a topping for grilled fish or tofu
  • Mix into fried rice

As with all our seasonings – try it on your favourite food and see if it works!!

Ingredients:  sesame seeds, sea lettuce, nutritional yeast, chilli flakes, salt

Allergens: sesame seeds.  This is a natural product and we try hard to ensure the seaweed is thoroughly washed however there may be traces of crustaceans, fish or molloucs.

Storage & Use: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use within 12 months of opening for optimal freshness.
